Before Mass
Preparation is key. Arriving early and setting up carefully ensures Mass runs smoothly.
Make sure the ambo (lectern) is ready with the Lectionary open to the correct readings for the day. Check with the priest or sacristan if you're unsure which readings are needed.
Using a candle lighter, carefully light the altar candles before the congregation begins arriving. Typically two or six candles are lit depending on the celebration.
Set out the chalice, paten, cruets of water and wine, and the lavabo (hand-washing) bowl and towel on the credence table near the altar.
If you are carrying the processional cross, make sure it is in its stand and ready for the entrance procession.
Arrive early enough to vest properly. Wear your alb or cassock and surplice neatly — you are serving God!
Take a moment of quiet prayer to prepare your heart. Ask God to help you serve well and with reverence.
